Running up stairs?

Ok, I'm really self conscience and I hate going to the gym. I live contained by a dormitory that is around 12 stories high. I want to lose some cargo. Do you guys think that running up and down stairs for an extended time of time is a good course to do this. ( coupled with a low calorie diet of course)
