If you are concerned he is taking it for STD infection, it is unlikely. STD's that can be treated near antibiotics such as gonorrheah or chlamydia call for treatment near a much more powerful antibiotic such as zithromax.
Side effects (as mentioned by other contribs would be sensitivity to sunlight or burning ulcerated throat).
