Answers:    Tumor just money abnormal growth of cell. There are "bad" tumors that can grow very hastily or spread throughout the body, but lipomas (abnormal growth of fat cells) are pretty adjectives and completely benign. If they are not causing problems they can merely be monitored. Reasons for removing them would be if they get big, compressing surrounding structures and cause symptoms, such as pain approaching you mentioned. The surgery is very simple, of late an incision through the skin and the lipoma is removed pretty easily. The procedure is done as an outpatient procedure, anesthesia is local, and the entire procedure usually does not concluding for more than 30 minutes.
I had one removed from my shoulder blade several years ago. I be in hospital overnight as it be rather voluminous but it was natural to remove as I believe lipomas are just beneath the skin. See your GP and he will refer your son to a broad surgeon.
