Vitamin C . . . worthless?

My girlfriend told me that in her psych. book, the author explains that Vitamin C is merely a placebo, and that taking it when one have a cold does zilch to ward the virus sour. I thought, for the longest time, that taking extra Vitamin C when I have a cold help my immune system recuperate faster. Have I be lead on by drug companies, or is this book newly pulling my preverbial tail?
